Places to eat and drink
Here are a few places we have had good meals at:
Elen's Castle Hotel - just down the hill so you would be supporting the Dolwyddelan economy. The hotel changed hands in 2007 and we have had many pleasant meals there since - together with, on each occasion, a good gossip with the owners Adam and Helen!
The village pub, Y Gwydir, has struggled in the past by, so the local perspective has it, not really addressing the needs of the village. In March 2010 a local builder bought it from the previous pubco owners, gave it a major make-over and it re-opened at Easter 2010, but it continued to struggle. In late 2012 another landlord obtained the lease and was looking like the best bet for quite a while, but it closed again in February 2015, only to re-open a few weeks later. This rather hand-to-mouth existence continued until just recently (Spring 2018) when a young couple took over and gave Y Gwydir a new else of life.
Ty Gwyn Hotel, Betws-y-Coed - quite smart, excellent food, good beer including Adnam's, but parking is a challenge.
Bistro, Betws-y-Coed serves the best food we have found in the valley; you will need to book.
Maenan Abbey Hotel - pleasant restaurant serving good food with an emphasis on local produce, cosy bar with very good bar meals. Both are worth the journey. Tim and Serra had their wedding here and the staff did them proud.
When we first came to Bryn Teg, we found the White Horse Inn, Capel Garmon, a cosy, friendly pub which served good pub food in an informal manner. Unfortunately we haven't been since it re-opened and can't find a review. However it is worth going to Capel Garmon for the stupendous view (the photograph does not do it justice!) from the churchyard opposite and the nearby neolithic burial chamber is worth a visit.
The Bryn Tyrch, at the Bangor end of Capel Curig, is every bit as good as the Guardian said - "best pub in Snowdonia" - in its recent supplement on the National Parks (for which I cannot find the URL). different Guardian review This is (almost) the view from the car park!
We have had a pleasant drink and good food at the slightly down-at-heel Tyn-y-Coed Inn also in Capel Curig. However, recent visitors were ungraciously refused food minutes after the advertised close of service at 2pm, which seems unnecessarily rigid and oriented towards the convenience of staff rather than the needs of customers.
The Asha Balti House in Llanrwst is a good Indian take-away. Llanrwst also has two excellent fish and chip shops; Tir-a-Mor gets particularly good reviews. Beware that they can close early by city standards, particularly in the winter - sometimes as early as 9pm.
Plas Penaeldroch Manor, just down the valley by Pont-y-Pant station, is gradually being refurbished so watch their website for developments. A pleasant cafe bar is open during the day for drinks and light meals.
